Overview

As has been the College's tradition for many years, Mitchell will be offering its summer support programs - STEP and PASS from July 2-27, 2003. Whatever your academic background, Mitchell's two summer support programs can prove beneficial to you as you make your transition to college life. Read on and discover how you can take a step toward academic success this summer and get the skills you need to pass your courses.

STEP - Summer Transition Enrichment Program

Mitchell's STEP is geared primarily for freshman-bound students (traditional, non-traditional and international) who are ready to begin their college studies, but who want to strengthen their study skills and get a headstart on their coursework. In addition to taking courses (up to 7 credits - 2 3-credit academic courses, English, psychology and/or computer science, and a 1-credit sailing course), you will work with Learning Specialists in individual and small group learning sessions to:

*gain an understanding of your learning strengths and weaknesses
*strengthen your writing skills
*get a headstart on your fall studies
*get used to college life before taking on a full academic load
*gain greater confidence in your abilities
*become acclimated to the Mitchell College campus
*enhance your social skills through small group interactions
*strengthen your interpersonal skills through weekly social activities and trips

PASS - Program for Academic Skills and Strategies

Mitchell's PASS is geared toward students that are juniors or seniors in high school, returning adult students, students with limited English proficiency, international students, and students motivated to strengthen and improve basic academic skills in preparation of post-secondary study.

In addition to the above benefits provided to STEP students, PASS students are allowed to take one academic course (English, psychology or computer science) and a sailing course. The difference from STEP, however, is the addition of a series of study skills workshops. The composition of these workshops is:

*Workshop I is designed to develop and/or strengthen vocabulary.
*Workshop II is designed to foster effective writing skills and competence in the English language arts.
*Workshops III & IV are designed to develop and/or strengthen math proficiency and computer literacy skills.
*Workshop V is designed to develop, strengthen and enhance efficient learning and study strategies.

At the Water's Edge

Both STEP and PASS students are housed in one of Mitchell's historic waterfront residences. An on-site professional Resident Director and a student Resident Advisor work together to create a close-knit community environment. Commuting students are also integrated into group social activities during the day and into the evening. These activities are designed to help students to learn about themselves as individuals and as members of the college community.

At the Water's Edge

Mitchell College is known nationally for the strength of our academic support programs. While enrolled in STEP or PASS, you will have access to a unique array of programs and facilities. Your meetings with your Learning Specialists will be held in our Academic Support Center, where you have access to the Learning Resource Center, ESL Center, and professional Tutoring Center, as well as our newly renovated library. Our technologically sophisticated campus also features 24-hour access to computer facilities in your residence hall, T-1 connections, and state-of-the-art labs. Add to that, two sandy beaches, a pond, and fitness trails in Mitchell Woods, and you have all the tools for success and smooth sailing this summer.

Costs of Attendance

The comprehensive fee to enroll in STEP or PASS as a residential student is $3,000. The fee to enroll as a commuting student is $1,800.
